During the summer of 2008, six students and two professors travelled to rural villages in Honduras to help with an existing humanitarian engineering project and to spread awareness about the importance of conservation and sustainability. The community of Colinas de Suiza is comprised of of refugees that had to relocate after hurricane Mitch in 1998. After ten years the community is anticipating the completion of a humanitarian engineering project to bring running water to their village. During their stay, the students helped fix a passive grey water system and complete a composting toilet, which represents one of the final stages of the water project. The project is the result of a collaborative four year effort between the CSM Humanitarian Engineering Program and senior design groups. Details about the activities and programs are available on the web at http://humanitarian.mines.edu/. (read Fiona Meinert's full article about the trip in the McBride Fall 2008 newsletter).
